Case Study

Office of National Statistics (ONS)

ONS is the largest independent producer of official national statistics. G7 were subcontracted by Sopra Steria Group to provide consultancy and development resource to build data cubes for the 2011 national census.  This project was conducted using the Agile methodology.

Scope of Project

Key project areas included:

  • Data cube design and implementation.
  • Delivery of automation scripts for the execution of datasets.
  • Delivery of administration scripts to enable the delivery of datasets to other business areas for additional processing.

G7: The solution

G7 installed and configured the Space-Time Research suite of SuperSTAR products for ONS so that a series of datasets could be produced by the Census Outputs Dataset Production (CODP) team.  The data contained within these datasets was created, so that ONS could then transform and publish it using the ONS Data Explorer.

The project remit included the application of data amendments to the Census database, the building of new SuperCROSS databases and first line support to the CODP team, who used SuperCROSS to produce datasets for the ONS standard census release schedule.  Technical assistance was provided on understanding and using the SDMX data format to statisticians responsible for delivering UK statistical data to Eurostat.

G7 input covered most aspects of the project lifecycle i.e. technical analysis, documenting user requirements, unit, system and performance testing.  A key aspect of the project was liaison with a third party software supplier - Space-Time Research (based in Australia), for the specification and delivery of bespoke functionality to modify their existing  tabulation product (SuperCROSS).

Bespoke aspects of the CODP solution were delivered using a variety of technologies such as Oracle PL/SQL and Microsoft .NET C#.
